The U.S. Military has long kept a presence in the Colorado Springs area. Perhaps the most well-known is the U.S. Air Force Academy, where Air Force officers are trained at the highest levels. On the Army side is Fort Carson, which was established in 1942 immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor. The first building was up in less than two months. It is named for the legendary Army scout, Gen. Christopher “Kit” Carson, who explored large parts of the West in the 1800s.
Peterson Space Force Base, formerly an Army Air Base, supports mission partners like North American Aerospace Defense Command, U.S. Northern Command, U.S. Space Command, Space Operations Command, and the 302nd Airlift Wing (Reserve). Also nearby is the Schriever Space Force Base, which is home to nearly 8,000 military and civilian employees. The Cheyenne Mountain Space Force Station is also in the area. Each of these supports NORAD, North American Aerospace Defense Command, the command group that strategizes how to defend the infrastructure of North America from foreign threats.
